Australian Broker of the Year
More than 500 insurance professionals gathered together, including brokers, authorised representatives, insurers, underwriters, and claims professionals to enjoy a night of glitz and glamour, where the intense work of the industry’s best was recognized in 25 prestigious award categories. In what was the first in-person celebration since the COVID-19 pandemic, everyone was happy to greet old friends, make new ones, and celebrate the successes of peers in the industry. As Kimberly Jonsson, CEO of CHU Underwriting Agencies – winner of the Underwriting Agencies Council (UAC) Australian Underwriting Agency of the Year award – puts it: “It’s been fantastic. I’ve had a wonderful night. It’s good to see everyone in person and looking so attractive.”

Nominations A nationwide call for nominations will be conducted from 28 March 2022 to 29 April 2022 using Insurance Business’ print and online channels. Nominations are open across 22 categories. Any individual or company operating in the Australian insurance industry is eligible to submit a nomination, either on their own behalf or for someone else.
Excellence Awardees Once the research has been completed, excellence awardees will be selected in each category (except the three National awards) and notified via phone and e-mail. Excellence awardees will also be announced in Insurance Business magazine and online.
Judging The Insurance Business Awards team will send completed excellence awardee submissions to an independent panel of judges, comprising insurance industry leaders and senior representatives. Judges will be well known and well respected within the industry and their judgment will be impartial, balanced, incisive and fair. Any judge with a conflict of interest in a particular category will recuse themselves from judging that category.
Winners The winners in each category were announced at the Insurance Business Awards gala dinner last Friday, on the 2nd of September 2022 held at the Doltone House, Darling Island, in Sydney. Winners were also published on the Insurance Business website.

The coveted Australian Broker of the Year award went to Jen Bettridge of Clear Insurance for her outstanding contribution to the industry. This national award was judged on multiple criteria, including client retention, customer service proposition, lead generation, relevant financial results, and contribution to the industry. Bettridge, who also took away the QBE Broker of the Year - Authorised representative award, stood out amongst a group of exemplary excellence awardees – all of whom won major broker awards: Frans du Plessis, Grace Insurance - Broker of the Year (1-19 Staff); Eli Tatarka, Scott Winton Insurance Brokers - Broker of the Year (20+ Staff); and Sharon Rutherford, Honan Insurance Group - Broker of the Year – Specialist. The recipe to success is simple, according to Bettridge. “It’s just keeping the client the main focus and making sure they’re the ones that are looked after at the end of the day,” she says. “That’s it.” The Smart Nine Australian Brokerage of the Year award went to CCM Insurance Group, with allinsure (Brokerage of the Year: 6-20 staff), Honan Insurance Group (QBE Brokerage of the Year: 20+ staff), and Imperium Insurance and Financial Solutions (Brokerage of the Year: 1-5 staff) all recognized as excellence awardees. Again, it is a focus on people that drives the award-winning brokerages’ success. Gary Sim, founder/director of CCM Insurance Group, which also took away the CHU Underwriting Agencies Specialist Brokerage of the Year award, says his team are focused on “understanding our clients, understanding what they do, actually caring about what they do, and actually tailoring a service to the individual clients and their needs.” Peter Chamberlain, managing director of Canberra-based allinsure, adds: “We’ve got a fantastic team of people at allinsure, and we’re very well supported by the amazing group of Insurance Advisernet. They just give us amazing tools and let us do us, which is amazing, and we get out and help our clients.” That people focus extends beyond helping end-clients. It is also essential in the success of the insurance ecosystem, as Jessica Jenkins national relationship manager at Brooklyn Underwriting - and winner of the UAC Underwriting Agency BDM of the Year award – explains: “I think it’s just a love and passion for helping and supporting, but also giving back to the broker community.” One of the most important accolades presented was the Kona Recruitment Australian Young Gun of the Year award, which recognizes an outstanding broker under the aged of 35, who has demonstrated excellent career progression and professional development, exemplary customer service, and strong business results. This award - which has high significance given the challenges the insurance industry is facing globally around talent attraction, recruitment, and development – was granted to Nicole Pallavicini of Marsh, who also won the AXA XL Young Gun of the Year – International award. She was up against stiff competition in Taela Bloemers of Status Insurance Brokers (former Corpsure), winner of the Young Gun of the Year – Independent (1-19 Staff) award, and Teighan Carr of Honan Insurance Group, winner of the Young Gun of the Year – Independent (20+ staff) award. Trent Brown, director of Allstate Underwriting, and director of finance for the UAC, sums it up the event nicely: “This is not something we do day-to-day for awards, but it is nice to recognise all the work that’s being done – and it sure is nice to grab an award.”
Research The Insurance Business Awards team will also conduct research and draw on knowledge and information gained through Insurance Business’ connections to the insurance industry in order to support and supplement nominations received and to ensure that no one deserving of recognition is missed. Excellence awardees will be determined from both pools of information.
