BROKER of the Year
BROKER of the Year
Teru came across the insurance industry by chance. As a school-leaver Teru was working in a wet, cold factory in Christchurch doing CNC machining work when he thought to himself, I can’t do this for the rest of my life. As a 21-year-old he was able to get his foot in the door to Aon NZ – one of NZ's leading insurance brokers. This opened his eyes to a world of opportunities, and he soon found insurance is what he is passionate about. As a proudly born Samoan, Teru explains that serving people is a huge part of Samoan culture – and being in insurance meant he could do this for his job.
Teru Time is personable, approachable and genuinely enthusiastic about establishing connections. His approach of putting people and relationships first has contributed to the incredibly fast growth of his business TIME Insurance. Teru started the business in March 2019 from his garage, and in only a short space of three years he has grown it to three staff and hired an office space in Lower Hutt.

Another reason Teru is passionate about insurance is helping business owners through a tough time. When making a claim, people are facing things like financial loss, or physical loss or damage to important assets. Teru has ensured that the claims process is where he can make a big impact to his clients – he has set up a team that helps his clients get cover easily, correctly and as quickly as possible. His team even assists clients in filling out lengthy insurance forms during an already stressful time, to give them peace of mind and make the process easier for them.

Teru is highly skilled and qualified, he has worked in the insurance industry since 2008, and in that time he has completed his qualifications to become a Snr Assoc ANZIIF, and completed the Financial Services Cert Level 5. Teru’s company TIME Insurance is a proud partner of Insurance Advisernet.
As for Teru’s vision, he is currently training three young Pasifika into the insurance industry, and one is already aiming to reach advisor level. He wants to encourage even more Pasifika into the industry to be able to access the opportunities that are available.
Teru says, “Insurance doesn’t have to be complicated if you have the right advice. We love being part of our community and supporting them any way we can.”
Joe Harawira, Director of 3 Māori Boys and one of Teru’s clients says, “I’m a director of a start-up beverage company where myself and my business partners are completely new to the industry. We chose Teru because he made things really easy – it’s important that our risks and liabilities are managed, but we also wanted to forget about having to deal with insurance so we can focus on growing the business.”
