The Advocis Award for Life & Health Insurer of the Year
WINNER:
With over 7.5 million members, 53,000+ employees and $397.1 billion in total assets (as at December 31, 2021), Desjardins is North America’s leading financial cooperative. Through its comprehensive network
of business entities and units, Desjardins aims to improve the social and economic well-being of people
and communities.
Desjardins’ network of secure and profitable financial services is owned and administered by its members, along with a network of complimentary financial organisations. It offers a complete range of services across Canada including wealth management, health and life insurance, personal and business services, and property and casualty insurance.
Desjardins takes its commitment to social and environmental issues seriously. It invests heavily into educating people – particularly its members – on democracy, economics, solidarity and individual and collective responsibility. It regularly hosts workshops and training sessions, and offers rebates on educational courses offered through Advocis.
Over the last year, Desjardins has expanded a number of partnerships to connect with the needs of the community. It recently launched a 5 pay participating whole life policy, making whole insurance payable in five years – the only option of its kind currently on the market. It has also opened a new client relations centre in Mississauga to serve its English-speaking members and clients.
Desjardins has also been ranked as a top employer in Canada. It has been working to make equity, diversity and inclusion a priority, and was recognised as one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers by Mediacorp.
One of its proudest creations is Empowering Women – a Canada-wide network of women and allies, which aims to help women in leadership to take their careers to the next level. Desjardins is also a partner of the Réseau des Femmes d’affaires du Québec, a network for women in business.
Over the last year, Desjardins has contributed significantly to the community and various non-profits. It donated over $3 million in grants to small businesses via its GoodSpark Grants programme, has invested
$3.2 million to support road safety, and donated $1 million to Kid’s Help Phone.
In addition to its community efforts, Desjardins has championed digital innovation and technology throughout its network. It recently launched its new Omni mobile app for group insurance, which helps clients to manage their insurance and reach their financial goals. It is also rolling out new voice recognition technology to improve fraud detection, and has launched an interactive webinar series to engage and interact with its advisors.
The goal of the webinars is to hear from industry experts and other advisors about winning strategies and best practices. While the post-pandemic period has brought a raft of challenges, Desjardins has pushed the company to use the strengths and skills of the team to do things differently once again.
Its 2,517 directors and 53,783 employees have all shown exceptional commitment and dedication, and each and every one of them has demonstrated an unprecedented ability to adapt without ever losing sight of their mission: To do what’s best for members and clients with the goal of being everyone’s number 1 choice.
