Philanthropy and community service are critical parts of the Kent & White Insurance’s strategy and guiding principals, handed down from generation to generation. This spirit of generosity brings with it connection, meaning, and a deeper purpose to one’s work and their business strategy is built upon it.
But this giving back manifests itself not just in cutting a cheque, but making sure that employees can get out there, roll up their sleeves and get active and involved in a meaningful way. The boutique firm’s 25 employees make up a corporate culture that oozes with a love of philanthropy, kindness, and care, from their headquarters in Bathurst, New Brunswick, and their branch office in Edmundston.
How the company does this manifests itself in several different ways. Financially, they return 15% of their profits to community groups annually. The majority of employees have contributed a further $2,000 annually through planned giving. Beyond the pocketbook, employees have contributed more than 600 paid time volunteer hours, which is spent at a charity or cause of the employee’s choice.
The company also employs a unique initiative, where every team member is given a half-day off and $100 to spend at a local business, doing something that they love. At the other end of the year, the company’s partnership with a local Spirit of Christmas campaign sees a donation of $2,000 every year, and three volunteer days put forward.
Outside of the office, the company and its team made donations to help those both up the road and around the world. They donated $20,000 for Ukraine relief, while another $15,000 was donated to two local hospital foundations in the area. About $25,000 was donated to support hospitals, chambers of commerce and the Soldier On charity which supports ill and injured veterans of the Canadian Armed Forces.
On top of this, they were the major sponsor, and part of the organizing committee, for a golf event that raised more than $85,000 for scholarships for local high schools. But there are many other head-turning ideas that Kent & White’s team have brought to life to help their community.
One very novel approach was purchasing a SOCAN (Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) license so that their company “on hold” music can feature and promote exclusively local Maritime artists in English and French.
For the summer months, the firm spent $10,000 to buy water wheel wheelchairs and accessibility mats to make the beach inclusive to anyone, regardless of mobility.
When Halloween parties were cancelled at the last minute, the firm swept into action to rally downtown businesses to open their doors to trick-or-treaters. More than 400 kids took part and the firm spent more than $2,000 on candy.
Finally, giving back also includes the environment. This is reflected in their internal peer recognition program. Each time recognition is given to a colleague, trees get planted in various countries in South America and Africa. Through the program, they’ve planted 2639 trees which also equals a carbon offset of 221,676 kg for the organization. It is not surprising to learn then that the firm won the CNA Aware for Excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility at the 2022 Insurance Business Canada Awards.

I used to work as people leader role
in one of the major banks. I believed I could do more for my customers, rather than just delivering a ‘no, sorry we can’t help at this stage.” I am dedicated to provide a very diversified solutions and approach of my business so that our team can provide comprehensive offerings to fulfil all types of customer’s needs.
The sense of fulfilment in diversifying our business has made life as a broker very rewarding. I established JKK Solutions in 2017 and when I named the firm, it's about providing a personalised solutions and to our client, rather than building customers on transactions. I place great emphasis on structuring the processes around earning relationships rather than expecting them. Over the past few years, I have invested a majority of time building up my firm and my team to ensure they are equipped with all the relevant skill set to offer a full product suite. Apart from this, we have also invested in technology, including Broker Engine, Quickli, Sherlock as well as growing the offshore team to facilitate with our growth.
I am a soccer person who plays every week and I am a big fan for Manchester United. I also enjoyed spending my leisure time with my family.
